Indian National Scientific Documentation Center (INSDOC)

- Established in 1952 with technical assistance from UNESCO

- Established to provide information support to scientific community in research organisation and industries

- INSDOC is a unit of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and under administrative control of National physical Laboratory, New Delhi

- It become independent organisation in 1963 - --expanded its scope, build up the National Science Library and offer regular full time training course in Information Science and Short training in all disciplines of INSDOC

- It has three regional center - Bangalore, chennai and Kolkatta


Objectives of INSDOC -
  1. To develop collection in field of science and technology
  2. To render all appropriate and feasible information service in the filed of science and technology
  3. To develop appropriate link with the information system and services organised in India
  4. To establish repository for reports of scientific work of the nation (both published and semi published)
  5. To contribute to advancements information science and library science through research and other activities
  6. To develop trained manpower for undertaking advance level task in the field of information science and services
  7. To participate effectively in international information exchange of scientific matters
Functions -
  1. To receive and retain all scientific periodicals
  2. To inform scientist and engineers of articles by issuing Indian Science Abstract
  3. To answer specific enquiries form scientist
  4. To supply photo-copies and translations of articles required by individual worker
  5. To be a national depository for reports of the scientific work of the nation
  6. To be channel through which the scientific work of the nation is made available to the rest of the world

INSDOC provides a full range of documentation and information services to research organisation, universities, industrial concerns, government departments, individual scientist and technologist

Information Dissemination

INDOC brings out following regular periodicals
  1. Indian Science Abstract - Periodicity - Fortnightly
  2. Russian Scientific and Technical publication - Periodicity - bimonthly
  3. Contents List of Soviet Scientific Periodicals - Periodicity - Monthly
  4. National Index of Translation - Periodicity - Periodicity - Monthly
  5. Annals of Library science and Documentation - Periodicity - Quarterly
Information Resources Development -

a) National Science Library - The library provides in house consultation facilities, reference services etc

b) Russian Science Information center - The center is holding rich collection of Russian Scientific publications being received from VINITI, Moscow

c) Centralised Acquisition of Periodicals - The NSL assists CSIR laboratories in the acquisition of foreign scientific and technical periodicals under its CAP project.

Information Access tools -

1. Directories - INSDOC brings out various directories giving information about scientific institution, scientific periodicals etc. The directories are updated and revised regularly

2. National Union Catalogue of scientific serials in India - The NUCSSI aims at providing easy access to the holdings of major libraries in the country. The catalogue contains data of 35000 titles of serials.

Manpower Development

INSDOC offers -

1. 2 year regular programme "Associateship in Information Science" equivilent to master degree

2. Education programme in documentation, translation and reprography

3. In service training in all discipline of library

Research and Development

INSDOC helps student to do research in library science

National and International Relation
  1. As a national centre for International Serials Data System (ISDS), INSDOC registers and assigns International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) to serials published in India.
  2. Under bilateral exchange programme, INSDOC maintains relations with a number of countries such as Hungray, Rumania, Poland, UK, USA, Russia etc
  3. INSDOC represnts India on a number of FID study committees, houses FID/IM secretariat and brings out FID/IM Newsletter.
  4. INSDOC is also a member of FID cinnussion on Asia and Oceania (FID/CAD)

Administration

The administration provides infrastructural support to scientific and technical personnel. INSDOC has been organised in following sections

  4. General Administration
  5. Stores and Purchase
  6. Finance and Accounts

Regional Centers (RC)
INSDOC regional center were set up in Bangalore, Kolkatta and Chennai in the year 1964, 1978 and 1979 respectively. These center was set up to reach even smaller place and fulfill the needs of research scholars
Objectives of Regional Center -

  1. To survey the information resources and services of the region and to utilise the facilities so as to meet the users need
  2. To compile, maintain, update and publish regional union catalogue
  3. To establish and operate strong reprographic center
  4. To procure on request documents from within and outside the region
Regional center, Bangalore

  • Established in 1964
  • Has its own building in the campus of Indian Institute of Science Banglore
  • It provide facilities like photocopies, slides, microfilms, microfiche, maintain union catalogue and created database using CDS/ISIS
Regional Center, Chennai

  • established in 1979
  • located in CSIR complex
  • Center is engaged in document copy supply and compilation of bibliography
Regional Center, Kolkatta

  • Established in 1978
  • It is located in the premises of Indian Institute of Chemical Biology
  • Document copy supply, search of literature, reprography etc
