Social Science Documentation Centre (SSDC)

During 1960 the government of India took serious note of the contribution the Indian social science can make in tackling the social and economic problem of the people.

1. Consequently the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in may, 1969

2. Task done by ICSSR  organising, sponsoring, promoting, coordinating, publishing and utilizing, research in social science documentation .

3. Top priority was given by the council to the setting up of a documentation centre to improve the quality and coverage of documentation and bibliographical services available to the social scientists of the country. 

4. Accordingly National Social Science Documentation center (NASSDOC) was set up in 1970 by ICSSR


Main Task or Activities - 

  1. Building up a collection of reference materials and works on research methodology
  2. Collection unpublished doctoral, theses approved by Indian universities and foreign theses on India
  3. Research reports of the projects undertaken by ICSSR and other social science research institution
  4. ICSSR funded seminars and conferences
  5. Periodicals of research standard in social science
  6. Providing bibliographical information about Indian publications in Social science disciplines to international documentation agencies
  7. Have bibliographic control over social science and provides list of these on request
  • Provide bibliographies on request
  • Provide reprographic services
  • provides document supply to scholars
  • Awards study grants to scholars for working at libraries of their interest in India
  • Provides consultancy to social science institution
  • conduct professional training programme
  • Promoting sale of ICSSR publications
Library -


1. Working Hour - The reading unit remains opens throughout the year, except public holidays

2. Periodicals - Current issues of most of the Indian social science periodical received by library. The two documents "ILRC Holdings List" and "Periodicals in NASSDOC: A current list" provide complete information about the periodicals holdings in NASSDOC

3. Reference sources - "Bibliographies in NASDOC", "Reference source in SSDC" and Social Science Research Methodology: A bibliography" can be consulted for locating desired reference tools.

4. ICSSR Publication - Besides updated ICSSR publications catalogue, a 'Guide to Books and Journals aided/published by ICSSR' compiled in NASSDOC, provides an overall picture of ICSSR activities in the publication filed

5.To furnish access to Ph.D. theses, two bibliographical lists entitled "Theses in SSDC" and "Research Project Reports in SSDC: An Annotated Bibliography", have been brought out and are updated time to time.

6. Documents in Microform - The following publication including journals are available on microfilm/microfiche in the library

NASSDOC International and Regional Level Cooperation

International :- NASSDOC provides input data regarding Indian Publications to International committee for social science information and Documentation, Paris, International Bulletin of Bibliography on Education published from Madrid and International Geographical Bibliography publihsed from Paris
It assisted UNESCO DARE data bank to update about research institutions, journals and research projects, completed and in progress in the field of social science in India

National : NASSDOC is the national contact point for the network and coordinates as well as promotes its activities.
